Three separate lawsuits which challenge the constitutionality of certain sections of the new welfare law were filed last week. Two of the suits, which aim to restore SSI and food stamp eligibility to immigrants, were filed in New York, and one in California. One of the suits was brought by New York City's Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani, on behalf of the 70,000 city residents who will lose their SSI as a result of the new law. All three challenge the law on the grounds that it violates the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution by targeting a specific group legal residents of the country and eliminating benefits to which they would otherwise be entitled.
KCDD supports this endeavor. It is unamerican to withhold benefits to
United States disabled legal residents when we support foreign able people.
