The Internet is the fastest growing market in the world - the
number of users has doubled in size each year for the past six
years! Current estimates place the number of users at over 60
million people on this information superhighway. An Internet
"shopping mall" would provide maximum visibility
to a very large customer base. This customer base, according to
a survey of Internet users, has an average annual income of between
$50,000 - $60,000, mostly married, and nearly half have at least
one child. This is an excellent target market for almost any product
or service.
Businesses are establishing a presence on the Internet’s World Wide
Web by the thousands, with more being added every day. John Patrick
in IBM’s Multimedia Today magazine has said, "Not being present on
the World Wide Web will soon be equivalent to not having a fax machine.
In the not-too-distant future, not doing business on the World Wide Web
will be equivalent to not doing business at all."
No matter what business you are in, the Internet is the medium
that will provide you with the widest audience. 50 million
of households in US own home computers, this number
is expected to reach 70 million by the end of the century. Half
of the computers in households are used for browsing on the internet.
When you add to this number, the number of people who access
the internet from their workplace, it is easy to see that, Internet
is THE medium that will reach a truly vast audience.
If you are selling a product or a service, consider the
following facts, and, you will see that
Internet is the medium that
will give you the maximum bang for your dollars.
Obtaining product information for purchases is one
of the preferred activities on the Net. It is estimated
that over 13% (7.8 million) of web surfers have
purchased products and/or services over the Internet.
It is estimated that retail sales on the Net will
total $7 billion annually by the year 2000 and
that "business-to-business" trade on the Net could add
up to 22 billion dollars a year.
A recent study by IBM (1995) suggests that online
catalogs on the Internet can save firms up to 25% in
processing costs and reduce cycle time by up to 62%.
Researchers have reported that net marketing may be
more effective than marketing through traditional media.
For example, one researcher suggests that marketing on
the web results in ten times as many units sold as
one-tenth the advertising budget.
